The choreographer Sally Marshall and I had met in 1979. She generously suggested me to director John Doyle for this job. I was keen to get it, not least because I’d just moved to Bristol, from which Cheltenham was a convenient commute up the M5 motorway. The Everyman Theatre was having finishing touches applied to its renovation when I went up for my interview/audition. I can’t remember much about it, apart from the moment when, on one of the staircases to the admin offices, John introduced me to his associate director, an encounter which was to change my life, and which I’ll detail in the following post.
John gave me the job of musical director/singer on Tomfoolery, which was very enjoyable, not least because my fellow performers were such good sports.
